I'll get back to this in a minute, but let me just say two words here.               Love,         Snacks     , now use them in all sentences;....Dogs ;    Love snacks,  ;  Love  ;  equals snacks.   That's it. Oh yea, one more thing. You are GOD !!      Get used to it.   Not only are your dogs going to look up to you as if you were a God, but you're going to have to behave like a God to get your dog(s) to toe the line. You have a wonderful opportunity to bond with a being that will be the best friend you'll ever have, but you're going to have to be tough too. I talk to my dogs as if they're human, and include them in everything, ...since I used to talk to myself anyway, why not ?? No really, dogs understand after a while, what you're saying, and that's exactly what you want them to do, so start talking. Not just "sit "and "stay", but," Hi how are, my you're looking good , my goodnes you are SUCH a GOOD DOG !! "  Now try and tell me that ain't gonna gitcha anywhere ! I get my dogs to talk back too, since they're people too. I want them to understand that they have a voice. When your dog understands that it has a voice, it will therefor understand that it's an entity, and has identity. That is the first step in helping your dog to see itself objectively,as a participant who counts on this earth. Encourage your dog to ' find itself ' .Once you can get them to speak on command, you can make them be quiet on command. See how that works. When you get them to come, eventually you'll be able to get them to go. " Go to your bed "..."Go outside "...." Get in the truck ", actually these days Goochi understands wazzup, all I do is say "Hepana" and she just heps to. When you get your dog to understand you, you'll find that it's your turn to understand him/her; because a sharp dog will be just as interested as you are in communicating, and that puppy has thoughts too! Best way to get in sync with your puppy is to go through the drive through at your local fast food and gitchersef's lunch. A pair of those buck burgers will do just fine for your pupness, which entitles you  to chomp down in pupnesses company; ...this time. Next time pupness does not get the burger and must stay in the back seat and not beg. Whoa ! Not beg ??!! I'm a working kinda guy. I eat lunch behind the wheel a lot, and my doggies will not touch my lunch, on the seat, even while I go make a call, or pump gas or what have you. That's a tough one till they understand that you're boss. It starts I think , with not letting them beg while I eat; In fact you should never let them stare at you. If you find your dog staring at you, you need to get tough quick. I'll get down on my knees and walk/crawl over real slow, stalking, staring back , drilling into their head, staring them down, when I'm in doggies face I'll loom up bigger and give a great bark right at them. That works first time on adolescent pups, but you gauge , size age  ferocity to suit. You don't have to nail a three month old puppy to the wall, but around a year, year and half, the competition begins, and if you loose you'll end up like the other poor sods whose dog won't come when called. Just remember what they do to each other. No matter how you try , you'll never be as cruel as one of their peers would be, and it's not likely that you'll ever draw blood with your teeth or even get fur in your mouth, ...maybe a little hair during anti teething training. Best way I found to get puppies to stop was to bite back. Such a look I got  from pupness, as if she'd been betrayed at first , then a moment later, she realized that the shoe was on the other foot and that biting hurts. Again I urge , be relative. A two week old is a different animal than a two month old, etc. I 've never drawn blood, but little by little as puppies gnawing becomes more painful I eventually match intensity till the moment comes when puppy looks at me, looks at my hand ; and just quits. Right there. I saw the moment and we both recognized it; the look in her eye, and ...."Did she say something?...I thought I heard her say something..."   it's over dad, ..I'm finished     ......if you start listening, you'll hear her. Soon you'll not even need words. I get that a lot with dogs riding in the front seat, upright, alert, they'll look over at me and go   '  Cooooooooooooooollllllllll , . . . . . ' You've got to really reach out with your heart and feel your doggy. You're the lucky one, you get to talk, imagine how puppy feels,...she wants you to hear her so bad it hurts, she's all bottled up inside and doesn't know how to get YOU to do what SHE wants. To get your dog aligned you have to align. Doing something requiring no words or egos is good,...play ball or something. I've found some dogs have a speciality and they'll show you if you pay attention and let your dog be a person too. There's a time for control and a time for play. Be very clear about the time and the place and they'll understand. When you get words/commands down it'll be easier. F'rinstance,....when we get to the beach I make them sit and stay till I'm ready, then I count to three; at the end of three I'll give them a potent " GO,GO " to match their excitement level and let'em rip after a few minutes I call them back and make them walk with me. Then I'll cut them loose again. That way I can get them to come and go, let them play at their pace yet still stay in control. Puppies love it 'cuz they get to run free as long as they come back when called. Puppies appreciate being trusted, and respect fairness. Most importantly, you want your dog to understand that there are different behaviours that will be acceptable, and that it needs to look to you for permission, and to identify which behaviour it's allowed to adopt at that moment. The way to that end is manipulation. Now the men reading this will understand this probably a bit better than the women, since men are manipulated so much in their quest for approval; by women. Any guy who's gone through this will know exactly what I'm talking about, and perhaps have more empathy for the dog looking up at him. Snacks !! Manipulation = snacks . To get my dogs under control, at first I use something they REALLY love, something short and sweet;  beef jerky ! If you find their favourite treat you'll be able to get your dog to just about anything ; ( guys, does THAT sound familiar?) If it does , then you'll know what you have to do ' to ' your dog;....tease them !! For instance, talking. To get your dog to talk, bite off a little piece of beef jerky and give it to him/her. WOoooooo !! LUUuuuuvvvv at first bite ! Now bite off another piece, put it in your closed fist and let puppy sniff away at it, and begin taunting;..."  want it?? ...snacks? ..here, take a sniff,...mmmmmmm, good huh?!,.wouldn't you like to get it ? " Wave it around, let him/her see it. Frustrate your puppy, tease it, taunt it,provoke a response till you get one; any response will do, but frustration will eventually produce a response, and when puppy responds, give it the snack. Then do it again immediately. This time it'll be quicker, and after several consecutive efforts you'll be able to get your doggie to bark or whine or something every time. The first time puppy whines or barks and gets a snack will be the time when you'll see a little light flash through it's mind  '.....hey, this works,I can get it by speaking up...I have a say here !!   WoW '   Give puppy another little piece of jerky;....you're communicating , and you both know it. I keep some jerky in my pocket all the time, and just to keep puppies attention, I'll pull it out and tease her for a minute with it, then put it back in my pocket . Cruel ?!  Unfair ?  Guys? Hey life is cruel and unfair. What you train your dog to do will save it's life, and that isn't cruel; it's necessary !
